A smaller breast reduction or breast lift surgery by board certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Suzman, called the Sports Reduction , can help women feel more comfortable in the gym, yoga, Pilates, golf, tennis, running, gymnastics, basketball-- any exercise activity
As a plastic surgeon, hundreds of patients have told me and our team firsthand how breast size can impact a woman's life positively. From physical comfort to athletic performance and self-esteem, most patients say having a reduction was “the best decision I’ve ever made”. While traditional breast reduction surgery is a well-known option, I want to highlight a lesser-known procedure that can be life-changing for many women: the "sports reduction." It is the term I use to describe smaller breast lifts and reductions with the primary focus of improving health and performance in fitness activities. From runners and casual exercises to elite golf and tennis and gymnastics professionals, the results of surgery can be dramatic.
What is a Sports Reduction?
A sports reduction is a breast reduction surgery that focuses on achieving a more modest reduction in breast size, typically around one to two cup sizes. This procedure is ideal for women who experience discomfort or limitations due to their breast size, particularly during physical activity.
Benefits of a Sports Reduction:
Improved Comfort: Smaller breasts can significantly reduce neck, back, and shoulder pain.
Enhanced Athletic Performance: Reduced breast size can improve mobility, balance, and overall athletic performance.
Boosted Self-Esteem: Many women feel more confident and comfortable in their bodies after a sports reduction.
Less Invasive: Compared to traditional breast reduction, a sports reduction is often less invasive with a shorter recovery time.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Sports Reduction?
Women who are generally healthy, have realistic expectations, and desire a more modest reduction in breast size are good candidates for a sports reduction. This procedure is particularly beneficial for women who are active or athletic and experience discomfort or limitations due to their breast size.
Recovery and Results:
Recovery from a sports reduction is typically shorter and less involved than traditional breast reduction. Most women can return to light activities within a few days and resume their normal routines within a few weeks. The results of a sports reduction are long-lasting and can significantly improve a woman's quality of life.
How do you decide what breast size to be after the breast reduction surgery?
A discussion with your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon is the starting point in choosing the best size. I find the following three factors to be ESSENTIAL in getting the best possible sports reduction results:
1- making the nipple level at or near the fold under the breast to eliminate droop and a hanging breast that puts strains on the shoulders and bra stap
2- Keep the distance from the nipple to the fold under the breast (inframammary fold, or IMF) less than 10 cm, or enough lift and reduction to avoid too much skin to skin overlap. This distance presents skin rashes and irritations and poorly fitting bras.
3-Use technology to predict best outcomes. We use Crisalix 3D and Vectra imaging to simulate results and help guide surgery. For post op bra fitting, we recommend FitMatch .ai-- you can get the app in the Apple iOS app store and use the iPhone Pro Lidar sensor to scan your self and get an ai perfect fit for the leading bra brands, including Skims, Lululemon, Alo and others.
Conclusion:
If you're considering breast reduction surgery, I encourage you to explore the option of a sports reduction. This procedure can provide significant benefits in terms of comfort, athletic performance, and self-esteem. As a plastic surgeon, I'm committed to helping you achieve your goals and feel your best.
