WHAT IS A Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment offered at Summit Group for patients seeking to rejuvenate their skin or address specific skin blemishes. During a chemical peel, a topical solution is applied to the face, promoting the shedding of old, damaged, or irregular skin layers. Once this exfoliation process is complete, a fresh and healthier layer of skin emerges in its place. There are various types of chemical peels, each tailored to target specific skin concerns such as acne, scarring, wrinkles, and dryness. Dr. Michael Suzman, a board-certified plastic surgeon, along with our skilled on-staff aesthetician, collaborates with each patient to devise a personalized treatment plan that meets their unique needs.

Types of Chemical Peels

Our office offers a variety of chemical peels, each tailored to meet the unique needs of our patients. The strength of the peel will be chosen based on your skin condition, aesthetic goals, and preferred downtime. Here are the types of peels we provide:

  • Superficial/Light Peel: This is the mildest type of chemical peel, typically administered in just a few minutes and requiring only about 3 to 5 days of downtime for peeling. During the procedure, only the top layer of skin is removed, resulting in an immediate improvement in texture, tone, and brightness. These peels often contain a blend of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), beta hydroxy acid (BHA), and may include salicylic, glycolic, or lactic acid. For optimal results, multiple treatments are usually recommended.
  • Medium Depth Peel: This peel penetrates deeper than a light peel, offering more dramatic results. Typically derived from trichloroacetic acid (TCA), this type of peel effectively targets issues such as hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and sun damage. Due to its deeper action, patients should anticipate a longer recovery period, as swelling, itching, and redness can last for about 10 days following the treatment. It's advisable to plan ahead to accommodate this recovery time.
  • Deep Peel: The deep peel is the most potent type of chemical peel, specifically designed for addressing deep scarring, excessive wrinkles, and other serious skin irregularities. While it offers the most dramatic results, patients may be taken aback by their appearance immediately after the procedure. This peel typically utilizes high-strength trichloroacetic acid (TCA), carbolic acid, or phenol to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. Due to its more invasive nature, some form of anesthesia may be administered. Following the treatment, the skin will appear intensely red, similar to the effects of a severe sunburn. The entire face may swell and form scabs, and significant peeling will occur, with recovery time lasting anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks or longer.

Mini facelift, chemical peel and upper eyelid blepharoplasty - 3 months post-op - Highly Recommend. Dr Suzman performed a mini facelift, including a chemical peel and blepharoplasty surgery on my upper eyes. One of my eyes had ptosis. Two other high rated Westchester surgeons told me they "wouldn't touch my eyes". Lucky me! I couldn't be happier. Friends, family and clients tell me I look "phenomenal" constantly.

What to Expect

Initially, the skin is thoroughly cleansed before a chemical solution is applied to the face. This application takes only a few minutes, during which a handheld fan is utilized to help minimize any discomfort. Patients undergoing a light peel may experience slight tingling, while a medium peel can cause a bit more discomfort. A deep peel, on the other hand, often necessitates the use of a numbing agent or anesthesia.

The variations between the different peels stem from the types of solutions used, the number of steps involved in the procedure, and the volume of solution applied. After treatment, a soothing ointment is applied to the skin to aid in recovery. In the days that follow, the skin will naturally begin to flake and peel. It's crucial for patients to resist the urge to pick at their skin or attempt to accelerate the peeling process, as this can lead to scarring. Additionally, patients should avoid sun exposure and diligently protect their skin during the healing period.

Rejuvenate Your Skin

To achieve a more flawless, brighter, and overall improved appearance, patients have several options to consider. The right treatment depends on the individual's skin condition and personal goals. Chemical peels, in particular, are excellent for addressing issues such as sun damage, pigmentation, scarring, and other skin irregularities. We encourage you to call our office today to schedule your chemical peel treatment.
