About A Septoplasty

A septoplasty is a procedure commonly performed by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Suzman to help correct breathing and cosmetic issues. The nasal septum is a rectangular piece of cartilage that formed in the center of the nose from the bones to the tip and run straight back. It divides the left and right side of the airway. When it is deviated or curved to one side, this may cause some blockage to the airflow. Treating septal deviation is part of a rhinoplasty surgery can definitely help patients. If the nose is crooked and shape, this part of the nose can be straightened along with grafts along the side called spreader grafts or other rhinoplasty techniques.

In most cases, Dr. Suzman perform septoplasty as part of his cosmetic rhinoplasty surgeries. Many patients ask whether insurance can cover septoplasty and they can sometimes lower the cost of cosmetic rhinoplasty if it is a medically necessary procedure for significant breathing obstruction or previous injury. We can learn more about medical necessity versus cosmetic rhinoplasty and what costs are during your consultation.

If a patient is suffering from a deviated septum, when the cartilage and tissue that connects the nostril is displaced, then a septoplasty is often the appropriate next step. After meeting with the patient in a private consultation at Summit Health's Westchester County, NY office, Greenwich CT Office or NYC care.

The staff and Michael Suzman are terrific. I've been to other plastic surgery offices for consultation and procedures, and this practice is far above the others. Everyone is warm, easy to talk to and patient. I would highly recommend!

What to Expect

A septoplasty is generally an outpatient procedure and can be performed under general anesthesia or a lighter version (twilight sedation). This surgery requires no external incisions since the plastic surgeon will lift and separate the tissue that covers the septum. This allows the surgeon clear access to the various nasal structures. The damaged structures will be reshaped, while not affecting the overall shape of the nose. The internal incisions will be stitched close afterwards. The surgical process typically lasts 1 – 1.5 hours. In some cases, a septoplasty is performed in conjunction with turbinate reduction surgery, which affects proper nasal air flow. A septoplasty can also be combined with rhinoplasty surgery to correct cosmetic nasal issues.

Anticipated Results

Following septoplasty surgery, there’s little pain, discomfort, swelling, or bruising. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a week. The patient should notice improved breathing soon after the surgery, which should continue to improve in the weeks and months following surgery.
