About Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most popular fat loss treatments offered. It is a surgical procedure that uses Body Jet technology, a water-assisted suction technique, to target stubborn fat cells and extract them in order to produce a more contoured, slim silhouette in the desired areas. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Suzman commonly performs this procedure to eliminate fat in the belly, back, legs, arms, and butt areas. It should be noted that this procedure is not performed as a way to address excessive weight loss, but rather is used to target areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Dr. Suzman can sit down with each patient at WESTMED Group's Westchester County office in a one-on-one consultation in order to customize a treatment plan to suit the patient's needs and goals.

Best Candidates

Liposuction is most commonly performed on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks and even the neck. The best candidates for liposuction are those who are in good health and experience:

  • Excess fat deposits that cannot be altered with diet and exercise.
  • Disproportionate areas of the body.
  • Good skin elasticity.

Body Jet Technology

Water-assisted liposuction by Body Jet is an innovative technique that differs from traditional liposuction in that instead of destroying the fat cells it uses water vibrations to dislodge the fat cells for a less invasive approach. Since water-assisted liposuction is less invasive, a general anesthetic is not necessary, and a local anesthetic combined with a saline-based tumescent fluid will be injected prior to the Body Jet device being administered. The entire process is a more gentle fat reduction treatment than traditional liposuction, allowing the water to aid in the fat removal process for less recovery time and more precise results.

What to Expect

Liposuction is usually performed as an outpatient procedure with the patient under local or general anesthesia. During the procedure, one or more small incisions will be made near the treatment site. A thin tube (cannula) is then inserted through the incision to loosen the excess fat, then suctioned out. The length of this procedure varies among patients, but it typically takes between 1-3 hours to complete. Following their procedure, patients should wear a compression garments for the first few weeks to reduce swelling and ensure optimal healing. Patients can expect minimal scarring at the incision site, but with proper scar management, it will be difficult to notice. In order for the results of liposuction to last, the patient should maintain a stable weight through a healthy diet and exercise.

Other Considerations

There are several variations on traditional liposuction, including:

  • Tumescent liposuction
  • Water-Assisted Liposuction (Body Jet)
