Overview
A neck lift is a common procedure that board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Suzman offers to his patients. This is an effective way to address excess skin and fat around the neck and chin areas. Often after weight loss or as patients age, loose skin can develop around the neck area. The neck lift surgically removes and replaces these skin folds in a strategic way to present a slimmer, more youthful neck and jawline. Dr. Suzman also offers a less invasive alternative to a full neck lift. The "H" lift, as he as dubbed it, successfully removes excess skin around the neck without altering the face or chin area. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia in his Westchester County, NY office, offering less downtime for patients who undergo this alternative. Other office based surgical approaches include the addition of Renuvion, a helium plasma skin tightening treatment that has nice results in most patients.
Best Candidates
We have had patients as young as 20-years-old come in for a consultation for a neck lift procedure. Younger patients may seek a plastic surgeon to remove excessive pockets of fat under the chin. This is done safely and easily in the office with very nice results. As patients reach the mid forties to fifties, skin f the neck and jowl areas can become more loose, and gentle tightening techniques are very effective. Patients aged of 60 – 70, want to rid their necks of the visible signs of aging. You are an ideal candidate if you are in good physical health and if you have:
- Excessive skin at the chin and jowls
- Unattractive jaw line because of the skin and deep wrinkles
- Maintained a steady weight for 6 – 12 months (for weight loss patients)
We invite you to have a consultation with our plastic surgeon if you would like to change the shape and profile of hanging neck skin to look younger with a slimmer facial profile.

Surgical Technique
During the surgical neck lift procedure and under a general anesthetic, the plastic surgeon will make an incision under the chin and, in some cases, behind or in front of the ears (if fat reduction is needed, liposuction will be the first step). Your incisions will be well-hidden within the hairline behind the ear or under the chin. Our surgeons take every precaution and great care to minimize surgical scarring. Then, the neck muscles will be pulled tightly into a higher position and the skin is pulled and re-draped. Lastly, sutures will close up the incision and drains may be inserted to avoid fluid buildup within the incisions. Depending on the extent of your procedure, you may be in the operating room for about 2 hours.
If the patient chooses to undergo the "H" lift method, then the procedure will take place onsite under a local anesthetic. Only the neck will be tightened and operated on, lessening the downtime and extent of the overall procedure. Board-certified Dr. Michael Suzman can walk each patient through the steps for both procedures during a private consult.
What to Expect
In the recovery area, our post-operation nurses will monitor the patient for about 45 – 60 minutes. After discharge, the patient will need to wear bandages and a compression wrap on their neck and chin to assist in the healing. They can expect to see slight bruising and swelling in the area for 2 – 4 days, and some patients report to feeling a continual tightness in the neck area. If the pain is not manageable with over-the-counter medicine, the patient may ask their plastic surgeon for a prescription strength pain killer. The sutures and drains will need to be removed at a follow-up appointment in 3 – 7 days after the surgery. Many of our patients are able to return to work in 7 – 10 days.
