Overview

Treating the loose skin of the neck is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures for both men and women.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Suzman offers a variety of effective techniques to address excess skin and fat around the neck and chin areas. Often after weight loss or as patients age, loose skin can develop, and many people feel it makes them look more old than their age or more tired.  The neck lift surgically smooths skin folds in a strategic way to present a slimmer, more youthful neck and jawline. Dr. Suzman also offers a less invasive alternative to a full neck lift. The "H" lift,  successfully removes excess skin under teh chin with a direct skin excision, avoiding a full face lift for those who do not need it.  Others choose an office-based neck and jawline lift with Renuvion, helium plasma radiofrequency tightening.  This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia in his Westchester County, NY  and Greenwich CT and Manhattan NYC plastic surgery offices,  offering less downtime for patients who undergo this alternative.

The neck lift is part of a facelift procedure, but focuses more on the under chin areas, and less on the cheek, eyelids and other areas.

5 Things to know about a neck lift procedure:

  1. Purpose and Benefits: A neck lift, also known as a lower rhytidectomy or platysmaplasty, aims to create a more defined jawline and a smoother, younger-looking neck. It addresses concerns like sagging skin, wrinkles, double chin, and neck bands

  2. Procedure Details: The surgery typically involves lifting and tightening the skin, removing excess fat, and tightening the platysma muscle. Some surgeons may perform a deep plane neck lift, which also contours deeper structures of the neck

  3. Recovery Time: Recovery usually takes about 1-2 weeks. Patients can expect some bruising and swelling, but these should subside within a few weeks. Most people can return to normal activities within this timeframe

  4. Anesthesia and Duration: Neck lift surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the amount of skin or fat removal, age of the patient, and patient  preference. Surgery take anywhere from 1.5-3 hours.  Additional procedures such as Renuvion radiofrequency tightening, deep plane facelift or chemical peel can also be added.

  5. Results and Longevity: The results of a neck lift are typically long-lasting, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle. However, the natural aging process will continue, and some touch-up procedures may be needed in the future for may patients.

Best Candidates

We have had patients as young as 20-years-old come in for a consultation for a neck lift procedure. Younger patients may seek a plastic surgeon to remove excessive  pockets of fat under the chin. This is done safely and easily in the office with very nice results.  As patients reach the mid forties to fifties, skin f the neck and jowl areas can become more loose, and gentle tightening techniques are very effective.  Patients aged of 60 – 70, want to rid their necks of the visible signs of aging. You are an ideal candidate if you are in good physical health and if you have:

  • Excessive skin at the chin and jowls
  • Loose jaw line because of the skin and deep wrinkles
  • Maintained a steady weight for 6 – 12 months (for weight loss patients)

We invite you to have a consultation with our plastic surgeon if you would like to change the shape and profile of hanging neck skin to look younger with a slimmer facial profile.

Dr. Michael Suzman performed a fat transfer, chin augmentation, chin liposuction and scar revision. I was amazed at what I was seeing by the end of the first week post-op. It has been a little over a month now and I am extremely pleased with the results. Dr. Michael Suzman did an “awesome” job which exceeded my expectations something I believe he has a reputation doing with his patients. I highly and wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Michael Suzman and wonderful staff at WESTMED.

Dr Suzman is amazing ! - I underwent a lower face lift by Dr Suzman in February, as I was troubled by my saggy turkey neck. Having tried a variety of non invasive procedures with poor results, I decided it had to be fixed surgically. I am an R.N. so I work alongside many doctors who I sought recommendations from. I did not make this decision rashly but gave it a great deal of thought and did my research also. Well, I...

Surgical Technique

During the surgical neck lift procedure and under a general anesthetic, the plastic surgeon will make an incision under the chin and, in some cases, behind or in front of the ears (if fat reduction is needed, liposuction will be the first step). Your incisions will be well-hidden within the hairline behind the ear or under the chin. Our surgeons take every precaution and great care to minimize surgical scarring. Then, the neck muscles will be pulled tightly into a higher position and the skin is pulled and re-draped. Lastly, sutures will close up the incision and drains may be inserted to avoid fluid buildup within the incisions. Depending on the extent of your procedure, you may be in the operating room for about 2 hours.

If the patient chooses to undergo the "H" lift method, then the procedure will take place onsite under a local anesthetic. Only the neck will be tightened and operated on, lessening the downtime and extent of the overall procedure. Board-certified Dr. Michael Suzman can walk each patient through the steps for both procedures during a private consult.

What to Expect

In the recovery area, our post-operation nurses will monitor the patient for about 45 – 60 minutes. After discharge, the patient will need to wear bandages and a compression wrap on their neck and chin to assist in the healing. They can expect to see slight bruising and swelling in the area for 2 – 4 days, and some patients report to feeling a continual tightness in the neck area. If the pain is not manageable with over-the-counter medicine, the patient may ask their plastic surgeon for a prescription strength pain killer. The sutures and drains will need to be removed at a follow-up appointment in 3 – 7 days after the surgery. Many of our patients are able to return to work in 7 – 10 days.
